A lot of people still prefer to shop for clothes at traditional retailers but keep in mind once you have your college email address you become eligible for a number of great online student discounts offered by most clothing brands. While everyone has their own style preferences, our advice is to make sure you bring enough clothes to last at least 2 weeks in between laundry days.
You should bring clothes for lounging around your dorm or house, going to class, socializing on weekends, working out at the gym, and formal business professional attire for interviews, career days, class presentations, and club events.
In addition, your school’s climate will also play an important role in deciding what clothes you need to bring to college. Students who go to school in an area with cold weather should remember to bring a warm winter coat, hats, and gloves. However, if you are planning on visiting home for fall break or before the weather gets cold, you can leave a majority of your winter clothes at home until you need them.
Keep in mind that space in your college dorm is limited and students usually end up bringing too much clothing that ends up never being worn. The simple rule to follow is if you don’t wear it at home then leave it at home. In order to avoid overpacking you should strategically lay out your clothes to determine what’s worth bringing.
We’ve noticed the types and amount of shoes brought to college vary drastically by student, from the person who wears the same pair of sneakers everyday to people with a pair of shoes for every outfit. The average college student will need running shoes for everyday use and the gym, casual shoes when on-campus and socializing on the weekends, boots for rainy or cold weather days, and flip flops or slippers for lounging.
For special occasions, such as interviews/job fairs, club/social events, and dates (if you’re lucky), it’s a good idea to bring a pair of dress shoes or heels. If you enjoy playing sports, you should also consider bringing a pair of athletic shoes such as cleats or basketball shoes. Students with a lot of shoes should bring a hanging shoe rack to save closet space.
Students will also need to bring standard wardrobe and storage accessories with them to college. Everyone will need a purse or wallet for storing their personal belongings, identification cards, and cash/debit cards. You should also bring belts for casual and formal use. While not absolutely necessary, it’s nice to have a pair of sunglasses, a watch, jewelry, and some hats for extra style.
