Every student needs a laundry hamper or basket for carrying their clothes to the laundry room. These items also function as a dirty laundry bin, which helps prevent clothing from being scattered across your dorm room floor. You can always bring a cheap laundry bag if you prefer keeping your clean clothes separate from the dirty ones.
It depends on the size of your wardrobe and schedule, but you should aim to do laundry at least once every two weeks. We recommend going during downtimes, typically in the early morning or later at night.
Most dorm laundry rooms are warzones, so it’s unwise to leave your laundry unattended for extended periods. It’s common to have your clothes stolen or taken out and placed on top of washing and drying machines.
Carrying a big bottle of liquid detergent to the laundry room is a hassle. Most students prefer using detergent pods because they’re light-weight and mess free. You can also get 3-in-1 pods with detergent, stain remover, and color protection!
Every student will get stains on their clothing at some point in time. We highly recommend bringing a container of bleach or a stain remover pen with you to college.
Color catcher sheets help students save time and money by allowing different colors to be washed in the same load.
Fabric softener and dryer sheets help protect your clothes from wrinkles, future stains, and lint. Most students use 2-1 softener and dryer sheets to cut down on the amount of items they need to bring to the laundry room.
Most students leave their iron and ironing board at home, but they’re helpful if you have the extra space. A helpful trick is to get a foldable ironing board and hang it on the back of your door. Unless you’re someone who needs their clothes ironed on a frequent basis, it’s probably easier to use a dry cleaners near your college for a small fee.
Dorm rooms are a nightmare for students who need to air dry some of their clothing. An easy space saving solution is to bring a foldable drying rack that you can store under your bed or the back of your door.
A sewing kit is definitely worth bringing if you’re capable of making repairs on your own. You never know when you’ll need to reattach a button or fix a rip.
While you don’t have to worry about cats or dogs in college dorms, it’s still common to get hair and lint on your clothing. A small lint roller is a great tool to have for cleaning bedding and yourself off.
Most dorm washing and drying machines require students to pay with quarters or by swiping their Student ID card. It’s super convenient to keep a month’s supply of quarters in your dorm room desk.
